NEW Z BOYS

PERSONAL SERIES | 2018

PHOTOGRAPHY

I VISIT THE VENICE BEACH SKATEPARK AS OFTEN AS I CAN. THE WEST COAST LIGHT, THE KIDS AND THEIR STYLE, THE SMELL OF THE OCEAN AND WEED, IT FEELS LIKE LIVING IN A LARRY CLARK MOVIE. THE Z-BOYS WERE A GROUP OF SKATEBOARDERS IN THE MID-1970S FROM SANTA MONICA AND VENICE, CALIFORNIA. FIFTY YEARS LATER I WITNESSED NO SENSE OF COMMUNITY. INSTEAD THERE WERE JUST KIDS SKATING WITH EARBUDS ON, BARELY TALKING TO EACH OTHER. IN SPITE OF THIS IT WAS QUITE A COMPETITIVE PLACE. THERE WAS AN INTIMIDATING “YOU-DON'T-BELONG-HERE” VIBE TOWARD FIRST-TIMERS. IT'S ROUGH AND CONTRIBUTES TO THE BEAUTY OF THE PLACE.
